This is the best day of my life

It’s been a long time since something blew my skirt up and made me want a cigarette. But – just in time for my birthday – comes these sweet little numbers.

LED lighting is way overdue for a makeover and it’s finally here. These pups are on indiegogo, so you can get in on the action early.

Here’s a one minute video and it’s beautiful.

Here are some stills.

This is some next-level Jetson’s lighting here. These are laser etched and the light source is reflected from the bottom to the transparent acrylic glass, just like those tacky, long spaghetti things where they put the light on the bottom and it magically appears at the opposite end.

Here are a few that shows some of their detail:

These are amazing and I want them now.

Unexpected Surprise

There’s a builder here in the hood that I don’t love. Don’t want to rag on any builders, but it is what it is. So, you can imagine my surprise when I go there and the interiors are pretty. It’s a disconnect like that clear Pepsi from a few years ago. Tastes the same, but you just can’t get on board. Sadly though, it ends up with a B-. Details, people.

I love a courtyard. It’s a tease, ya know? It just says “Come up and see me sometime”.

I’m crushing big on these textured walls. It was like river rock. Beautiful. And this chair at the bottom – just a hint of mid-century. A shout out, if you will.

No post would be complete without lighting to swoon over.

I love the hanging lamp that looks kinda Moroccan.  And now, let’s take a look at this…

This builder has managed to take the three things I hate the most and smashed them together. Granite, bathtubs, and wallpaper. I can just hear the people at a conference table all corporate and shit, and they look at each other and say WOW! Why didn’t we think of this before??

It’s giving me the middle finger.

I went to Pier 1

Pier 1 is where I got my first set of dishes and over the years, it’s been my go-to for misc doo-dads, like a lamp or two, maybe a cool mirror, a random side chair. Stuff like that. Oh-let’s not forget their usually awesome Christmas ornaments. In my family, we have been doing an ornament exchange and it’s been really fun, so Pier 1 is kinda part of the family.

This visit was somewhat uninspired, though. They were putting out new stuff (holy crap-it was Fall stuff. Wha???) Anyway, not too much caught my eye, but I’ll share anyway. You know you want to look.

It was a quickie, for sure. Kinda disappointing.

Huge House in Wesley Chapel

I can’t tell you how jazzed I am to see no granite. Granite has become some kind of standard as to what makes a “nice” kitchen. It chips, it’s tough to clean, and everyone seems to choose the same color palette. Really? People-you can do better.

This house has Zodiaq and I got the shivers when I saw it. I kinda had to control my squeeling reflex because other people were around. This is not really in the hands of the designer, but a very nice surprise nevertheless.

This designer has used a beautiful color palette and the cohesiveness is very impressive. Only 1 misstep, but it’s one of my pet peeves. Those damn pictures in the hall. In spite of this, it gets a straight-up A.

Two videos because I’m not that great. Watch, enjoy. Oh, and I figured out how to put speech bubbles in the videos. More opinionated commentary for you!!

IMG_2845 IMG_2846 IMG_2847 IMG_2848 IMG_2849 IMG_2850 IMG_2851 IMG_3029 IMG_3030 IMG_3031 IMG_3032 IMG_3033 IMG_3034 IMG_3035 IMG_3036 IMG_3037 IMG_3038 IMG_3039 IMG_3040 IMG_3041 IMG_3042 IMG_3043 IMG_3044 IMG_3045 IMG_3046 IMG_3047 IMG_3048 IMG_3049 IMG_3051 IMG_3052 IMG_3053

Oh god the risers on the stairs make me swoon.

IMG_3054 IMG_3055 IMG_3056 IMG_3057 IMG_3058 IMG_3059 IMG_3060 IMG_3061 IMG_3062 IMG_3063 IMG_3064 IMG_3065 IMG_3066 IMG_3067 IMG_3068 IMG_3070 IMG_3071 IMG_3072 IMG_3073 IMG_3074

The grouping of pictures below is one of the things that makes me want to stab myself. There is no circumstance where clusters of pictures like this is acceptable. They’re never hung straight and the pictures themselves are always slightly skewed. That drives me nuts. Just put something else there.

IMG_3075 IMG_3076

See those pictures?? Just awful.

Texture is always good. I enjoyed this little vignette in the spare bedroom.

IMG_3077 IMG_3078 IMG_3079 IMG_3080 IMG_3081 IMG_3082 IMG_3083 IMG_3084 IMG_3085 IMG_3086 IMG_3087 IMG_3088 IMG_3089 IMG_3090 IMG_3091 IMG_3092 IMG_3093 IMG_3094 IMG_3095 IMG_3096 IMG_3097 IMG_3098 IMG_3099 IMG_3100 IMG_3101 IMG_3102 IMG_3104 IMG_3105 IMG_3106 IMG_3107 IMG_3108 IMG_3109 IMG_3110 IMG_3111 IMG_3112 IMG_3113 IMG_3115 IMG_3116 IMG_3117 IMG_3118 IMG_3119 IMG_3120 IMG_3121 IMG_1520

The lighting in this house was mostly uninspired, but there are some other details that offset that.

Wait-I totally take that back. If the lighting isn’t good, it gets a full letter downgrade. So it gets a B. Actually, a B-. The grade is fair, mostly because of the sexy beast of a sofa and the stairs. Great use of turquoise, though. You get the point, but you aren’t overwhelmed with it. As Martha would say – It’s a good thing.

Turn off the dark

Let’s talk about finials. In architecture it’s a decorative device, usually carved in stone, to emphasize the gable or corner of a structure. Typically a finial is thought of in relation to curtain rods. That’s obviously not what we’re talking about here. Most lampshades are fastened to the lamp using a finial. Like this:

You’re probably at home thinking these all look the same and I’m yanking your chain. These were from DIFFERENT homes, all with a price tag of over 400k. All in one day. Changes things, right?  Builders throw money at their models, so wouldn’t you think these little details would pack a bigger punch?

These two are better than nothing, but you know what? These two lamps came with the finial all ready to go. In my head, there is some person in a lamp factory somewhere who said Wait!!! You can’t let that lamp go outside looking like that, all naked and shit. Put these on.

And just like that, the sun came out. But two lamps aren’t exactly a trend. So, one more example and then we’re going to get dirty together. The little guy below is someone, somewhere, looking into the vastness of space and just giving up. Just throwing their hands up.

I know you don’t want bland, so let’s look at some possibilities. Below are some fancy finials for you to put on your “must have” list.

Full disclosure, the above are all north of $200, so I’m thinking out of reach for us mortals. If you’re in the 1%, they can be found here.  For the rest of us, How about onyx, jade, or glass?

Things are looking up, right? I have a little weakness for dragonflies, and I found this little gem:

A few random finials for you:

I enjoy a well curated collection, the thrill of the hunt and all that.

These are supposed to be for curtains and believe me, we will get to curtains, but I think these would be great on a drab lamp. These too:

Love the sweet little blue bird and the palm trees. I’m also a big a fan of pineapples and fleur de lis. Lots of whimsy, texture, and imagination. There are trillions of examples on the internet. How hard is this, designers??

If you have a short lamp and want to put some fishnets on it, finials are your answer.

Oooohh. Touch me right there.

Finally. A model home that is just right. Doesn’t take itself too seriously and it looks like someone lives there. Oh, there are tons of pictures. It was a 2 story house and I loved almost everything in it. So-if you don’t like to look – well, if you don’t like to look, what are you doing here?

IMG_3611 IMG_3603 IMG_3605 IMG_3604 IMG_3614

This lamp makes me swoon.

IMG_3613 IMG_3615 IMG_3616 IMG_3617 IMG_3618 IMG_3619 IMG_3620 IMG_3621 IMG_3622 IMG_3623 IMG_3625 IMG_3626 IMG_3627 IMG_3628 IMG_3629 IMG_3630

The upstairs was whimsical and had a super cute dog theme and if you don’t love dogs, I don’t even want to know you. They did a really good job of choices and placement.

IMG_3631 IMG_3632 IMG_3633 IMG_3634 IMG_3635 IMG_3636 IMG_3637 IMG_3638 IMG_3639 IMG_3640 IMG_3492 IMG_3493 IMG_3494 IMG_3495 IMG_3641 IMG_3496 IMG_3497 IMG_3498 IMG_3499 IMG_3500 IMG_3501 IMG_3502 IMG_3503 IMG_3504 IMG_3505 IMG_3506 IMG_3507 IMG_3508 IMG_3509 IMG_3510 IMG_3511 IMG_3512 IMG_3513 IMG_3514

I love the fishnets they used for curtains. Good imagination. And that purple/lavender wallpaper kinda makes me want to go to the dark side.

IMG_3515 IMG_3516 IMG_3517

This lamp. Goodness. The glass is fabulous and I love that the inside of the shade matches. You sexy little bitch.

IMG_3518 IMG_3519 IMG_3520 IMG_3521

The white on white canvas is textured. It tickles.

IMG_3522 IMG_3524 IMG_3525

Oversized pictures can be tricky but this one works perfectly at the end of this hall. Tip of the hat to you, designer.

IMG_3526 IMG_3527 IMG_3528 IMG_3529 IMG_3530 IMG_3531 IMG_3532 IMG_3533

This lamp. Yes, please.

IMG_3535 IMG_3536 IMG_3537

Nice legs there, little lady.

IMG_3538 IMG_3539 IMG_3540 IMG_3541 IMG_3542 IMG_3543

These croquis are super fun. I think I would have painted them, though. A face, maybe some clothes.  Or they could have been on a tandem bike. That would’ve been cool.

IMG_3544 IMG_3545 IMG_3546 IMG_3547 IMG_3548 IMG_3549 IMG_3550 IMG_3551 IMG_3553 IMG_3554

Oh dear. The owl. Will we ever escape?

IMG_3555 IMG_3556 IMG_3557

The boys’ room was pretty cool. They took that football theme all the way, didn’t they? And yet, the football is upside down. I’m pretty sure that wasn’t on purpose, but it cracks me up.

IMG_3559 IMG_3560 IMG_3561 IMG_3562 IMG_3563 IMG_3564

Behind this little glass Jane Russell, what do you see? Could it be granite that clashes with the back splash? Because that’s all I see. Every single day. If you’re blind and someone picks out your house for you, remember to ask if the curtains match the carpet. Jeez, people.

IMG_3565 IMG_3566 IMG_3567

This bedroom is unisex, as far as I’m concerned. Again it has wallpaper I actually like. Super cute fake books.

IMG_3569 IMG_3570 IMG_3571 IMG_3572 IMG_3573 IMG_3574 IMG_3575 IMG_3576 IMG_3577 IMG_3579 IMG_3580 IMG_3581 IMG_3582 IMG_3584

Love the Bowler hats.

IMG_3585 IMG_3586 IMG_3587 IMG_3588 IMG_3589 IMG_3590 IMG_3593 IMG_3594 IMG_3595 IMG_3596

I love these glass knots, but I sure am starting to get sick of seeing them. Scale back, designers.

IMG_3597 IMG_3598 IMG_3599 IMG_3600 IMG_3601 IMG_3602 IMG_3606 IMG_3607

IMG_3608 IMG_3609 IMG_3610

These chairs give me the vapors. Sexy and smooth.

IMG_3612 IMG_3643 IMG_3646 IMG_3648 IMG_3642 IMG_3645 IMG_3644 IMG_3649 IMG_3676 IMG_3692 IMG_3681 IMG_3672 IMG_3685 IMG_3679 IMG_3680 IMG_3700 IMG_3689 IMG_3674 IMG_3698 IMG_3677 IMG_3650 IMG_3694 IMG_3690 IMG_3695 IMG_3673 IMG_3687 IMG_3664 IMG_3665 IMG_3667

These organic “things” (whatever they are) are visually interesting and I don’t think I’d get tired of them in 10 minutes. Tip of the hat.

IMG_3668    IMG_3655IMG_3697 IMG_3683 IMG_3654 IMG_3678 IMG_3659 IMG_3693 IMG_3671 IMG_3696 IMG_3691 IMG_3682 IMG_3658 IMG_3656

All of the pieces of paper stuck in the base of this lamp were little love letters. Swoon.

IMG_3669 IMG_3699

A builder detail, but this is finally a backsplash I could live with. Maybe.

IMG_3489 IMG_3661 IMG_3660 IMG_3662 IMG_3670 IMG_3701 IMG_3653 IMG_3663 IMG_3711 IMG_3723 IMG_3724 IMG_3725 IMG_3731 IMG_3727

So it’s pretty obvious that this house pleased me. A solid A, for sure. A good portion of that, I admit, was because of the dogs. I’ve been waiting for a designer to incorporate some realness up in here. A lot of creativity and it worked. The whole thing pulled together nicely.

Super cute little guy in Wesley Chapel

IMG_3910 IMG_3905 IMG_3911

IMG_3940    IMG_3945

I love this childs room. Rooms for kids have been a pain in my ass for a long time, but lately it seems the designers have stepped up their game. Great detail in this room.

IMG_3941  IMG_3942

IMG_3948  IMG_3949

Super cute, right? The acrylic light really makes it pop.

IMG_3929                IMG_3928IMG_3927

This closet has a bench. And great lighting. And a tall vase on the floor. Take me now!!

IMG_3900  IMG_3931IMG_3932

IMG_3883    IMG_3918IMG_3923 IMG_3889 IMG_3915 IMG_3922 IMG_3916 IMG_3903IMG_3894  IMG_3908 IMG_3921 IMG_3884 IMG_3902 IMG_3943 IMG_3896IMG_3886 IMG_3885

I’m not a big fan of round mirrors, but this guy is perfectly placed. There are close-ups of the frame in the second picture, and you can see the fabulous 3-dimensional texture.

IMG_3895  IMG_3950IMG_3913 IMG_3951IMG_3917IMG_3920 IMG_3898 IMG_3914  IMG_3888 IMG_3899 IMG_3946 IMG_3890  IMG_3891 IMG_3897  IMG_3912 IMG_3936 IMG_3919  IMG_3938 IMG_3933IMG_3924

I love this sweet picture of ballet shoes. Not in-your-face Pepto pink.

 IMG_3934 IMG_3892 IMG_3925 IMG_3926  IMG_3939 IMG_3935 IMG_3937 IMG_3887

Overall I would say I’m down with house. The colors weren’t trying too hard and the overall vibe fit the architecture nicely. I have to give this one a B because I really think they could have done better with the lighting. The light over the dining area was pretty cool, but the lamps and other lighting didn’t make me breathe hard. The sconces made me overlook a few downgrades. Lots of texture and deep yellow. Nice. The living room was rather uninspired and the bathrooms could have been done by a teenager, so I stand by that B.

I went to Pier 1 today

IMG_3776 IMG_3777 IMG_3778

Glass, Glass, and more glass. I know you read my post about Chihuly, which was not only spectacular, but completely justifies glass of any kind. Look at those little sexy bitches.

IMG_3779 IMG_3780 IMG_3782

Oh my god-the brown glass one here…makes me swoon a little. It looks like the same shape as the purple one I wrote about a few weeks ago. (Jeez people, keep up. You’re missing the good stuff.) It looks so retro and ‘I Dream of Jeannie’. Love it. And then of course, you have the glass balls. I know your balls aren’t glass and aren’t you happy about that?

IMG_3783 IMG_3784 IMG_3785

This turquoise floor lamp makes me happy, for sure and the candle holder has a nice shape and it’s a little different. What’s not to love? The one in the middle I took for my own selfish reasons. I’m looking for bedroom lamps right now and was thinking about a wood one because our furniture in there is wood and leather (yeah, baby). So I’m going to gaze for a while and see how it rolls out. Oh you know I’ll share. You’re a voyeur.

IMG_3786 IMG_3787 IMG_3788

Everything about these three makes me happy. Those white swirls in the first picture are so pretty. The purple ones are fabulous, and that one on the end should really be living with me right now. Super pretty.

IMG_3789 IMG_3790

I saw these Martini “glasses” and they just made me happy. They’re metal-I don’t know-maybe aluminum? Anyway, they were striking and unusual. You may get tired of them after a while, though. Or you could just do the obvious and mix them up with your other martini glasses. I know you drink.

IMG_3791 IMG_3792

Yes, red is a thing now. We’ll do a dish event when I feel like it, but I thought you may want a little peek. I really like red in the house. It doesn’t come close to my undying love for turquoise, but it’s up there. And can you even stand that chair?!? I love it so much, what did I do? I bought two of them. I’m getting rid of my leather loveseat in the living room and will replace that with these and a little table between them. I love the color and the whimsy. I believe I’ve mentioned that my house is on the smaller side and is very modest. They stay true to the size, architecture, and lightness of the house. These will perk it up and add to that homey vibe.

And finally. Remember when I wrote about this owl thing? Well, in fairness to owls everywhere, I felt like I owed it to you to show you yet another one. This one doesn’t provoke my gag reflex though, but I still don’t want this shit in my home.
